Milagros' Story
Milagros del Rosario Pérez Peralta was born on August 29, 1954, in the small village of Jamamucito, in San José de las Matas, Dominican Republic. The fifth of eleven children, she assumed a maternal role early in life, nurturing her younger siblings and embodying the instincts of a caretaker and homemaker from a young age.
Her life took a vibrant turn when she and her family migrated to the United States. In this new environment, Milagros fully blossomed into herself — an energetic, focused, and determined young woman who seized each day with purpose. She worked as a seamstress at her family's manufacturing business during the day, then attended school in the evenings, mastering English with the same determination she brought to everything else. She was an avid student of fashion and a genuinely talented dressmaker, with an eye for design that went beyond the practical. In her free time, she treasured sleepovers with friends, window-shopping along the avenues, and keeping up with the latest fashion trends.
She met Juan, and the two fell in love. They moved in together, thrilled at the prospect of starting a family of their own. By the summer of 1976, Milagros was four months pregnant, and their future together had never looked brighter.
Then, on an August morning — the day after her 22nd birthday — Milagros was kidnapped.
She was last seen exiting what was then the New York State Department of Labor office (now the site of the Dime Residences) in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. That morning, she was expected to walk five blocks to help her brother and sister-in-law, who had just welcomed their first newborn. She never arrived.
